We recently just finished testing our M42 cobalt gold drill bits up against eight other brand cobalt drill manufacturers and found we have by far the best value when it comes to cobalt drill bits. First we found some of the companies out there say there bit is cobalt when in fact it is just a coated high speed steel. Beware of the words cobalt coated. Cobalt (pronounced KOH-BOLT) is a hard, lustrous, gray metal, a chemical element with symbol Co and atomic number 27. The metallic cobalt was not discovered until 1735. Pure cobalt is not found in nature but small ammounts of it are found in rocks, soil, plants and animals. Basically found in the form of ores. Cobalt is usually not mined alone, and tends to be produced as a by-product of nickel and copper mining activities. How to choose the right drill bit

Choosing the right drill bit can sometimes be a little difficult. Drilling hard steel or metal you would sometimes be better off with a cobalt drill bit rather then a high speed steel drill bit. Remember the harder the drill bit, the more brittle the drill bit.
High speed steel drill bits are generally the most common for most uses. If you are dealing with a hard wood, sometimes it is wise to use titanium drill bits, because it dissipates the heat better. Keeping the drill bit and the wood cooler during the drilling process. When Hard steel and stainless is an issue, it is usually better to use a cobalt drill bit. And finally depending on the drill motor and the feed and speed rate, a carbide drill bit might do the trick. I have found that when drilling out broken bolts, screws and easy-outs, DrillBitWarehouse.com has a great set of left handed drill bits. A left handed drill bit has a reverse flute so all you do is put it in a hand drill in reverse and it just makes drilling out bolts so much easier. Sometimes I use a solid carbide rotory burr, if the broken bolt is made out of super hard steel. With a micro-grain burr it actually grinds through it and drills it out. I bought a Set of four extra long carbide burrs and they really come in handy when a long reach is needed.

In this market you need to be aware of cheap knock off's of good tools.

Here is a classic example. Drillbitwarehouse.com has the original 100 piece security bit set. It comes complete with 100 bits and each bit is made from m2 high speed steel. We recently did some checking and found there are many knock offs of this set selling for much less. After testing the hardness and all-around quality we found a huge difference. The size of the bits were all over the place and many of them were so soft they were almost imposible to even use without destroying the security screws and female heads they were designed to work with. The Drill Doctor feels the best price is usually never the best value when it comes to tools these days.

First off I have found there are many diferent styles of long drill bits. First off There is the AIRCRAFT Extension Drill. This is a drill bit that normally comes in either 6" or 12" lengths and is made from High Speed steel or Cobalt. It is made in both Fractional sizes and Number Sizes. It's primary use is for reach. These come in a short flute length but a long shank. This bit is used heavily in aircraft and transportation manufacturing. A good High speed steel drill bit seems to cover most light gauge steel, composites and wood. Titanium however seems to disappate the heat better when drilling through harder materials keeping the drill bit cooler but once the titanium wears down what you have left is a high speed drill bit. drillbitwarehouse.com has a good M2 high speed steel base so the combination of the titanium and M2 high speed steel work great together.

M42 Cobalt Drill Bits seem to be a big step up when it comes to drilling harder materials like stainless steels, hardened alloy and hard thicker composites like, graphite, fiberglass or plastics.
